Research & Initiatives

What do we study?

Our research focuses on translational science
aimed to develop clinic-ready treatments and to elucidate the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying critical care illnesses.
We are particularly interested in understanding the role of proteolysis involved in vascular dysfunction and inflammation.

The questions we strive to answer include:
Why does blood pressure fail to improve after shock?
What are the pathological mediators/proteases in shock?
How do we optimize treatment or resuscitation?

Our lab is currently investigating the following topics:

  • Anti-proteolytic treatments for experimental
    trauma/hemorrhagic shock

  • Role of the gut in hemodynamic instability in shock

  • Proteome in critically ill patients in sepsis/shock

  • Pathophysiology and treatment of abdominal adhesions after surgery

  • Role of proteolysis and the effects of trauma/shock in aging
